Position Description

Under direction, performs highly responsible work involving the prevention and suppression of fires, and skilled lifesaving and technical emergency medical services work in the field. The employee is responsible for responding to emergency situations and assisting in the control and resolution of the situation. The employee works within the scope of established Fire Department rules, regulations and procedures, however, is expected to exercise considerable judgment and initiative, in emergency situations. Objective is to prevent and minimize injury and/or the loss of life and property in emergency and fire situations.

Job Duties

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. Responds to fire alarms with a fire company; prepares to fight fire by connecting hose to hydrants or pumps and joining hose sections and nozzles to hose.
Enters burning building and operates nozzle to direct stream of water on fires.
Operates hand fire extinguishers and similar equipment to extinguish fires; raises, lowers, and climbs ladders.
Ventilates burning buildings to carry off smoke and gases.
Rescues individuals and provides appropriate emergency medical assistance.
Performs salvage operations such as placing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
Operates pumps to maintain an adequate water volume and pressure.
Attends instruction sessions concerning firefighting methods, equipment operations, emergency medical related subjects, and street hydrant locations.
Performs custodial duties at the station; cleans and maintains Fire Station facilities and equipment; inspects fire equipment for necessary repairs.
Maintains vehicles and equipment daily.
Maintains and submits routine records and logs.
Participates in public education and community outreach programs.
Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED. Must possess State of Florida certification as a Firefighter Minimum Standards and State of Florida certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Emergency Vehicle Operator Certification (EVOC). Must posses and maintain a valid Florida driver's license without any restrictions that may affect ability to perform the essential functions of work outlined herein.

Candidates who are already State of Florida certified Paramedics are preferred. However, EMT’s will be considered with a commitment to be a State of Florida certified Paramedic within 3 years of employment. Failure to obtain certification will result in termination of employment.

Supplemental Information

Substantial knowledge of scientific and technical principles and methods regarding fire suppression, prevention and safety.

Substantial knowledge of modern firefighting principles, practices, and procedures.

Substantial knowledge and skills in the operation and maintenance of various types of apparatus and equipment used in firefighting activities.

Knowledge of basic life support as applied to emergency treatment.

Knowledge of City geography including location of fire hydrants.

Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency conditions.

Ability to operate heavy fire apparatus safely and efficiently.

Ability to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions.

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other Fire agencies, and the general public.
